After looking at hundreds (maybe thousands) of examples and selecting over 50 for future reference I came up with a personal style that I think will fit the challenge. Working with Photoshop I simplified my original design so that it would translate well in fabric.
Last weekend after designing my main component, I headed over to Kinko's to get a full size print made for my master pattern. I have been rummaging through all my hand dyed and Ghana batiks to get a painterly feel for my piece. The family room looked like a fabric explosion for a few days (OK, a week) but those are now all folded and reorganized. I have made most of my color and fabric selections and I am happy with my progress.
I was also inspired by the new show on Oxygen called "Street Art Throwdown". It is interesting to see the process actual street artists do as they lay out their work on such a large scale and on difficult surfaces. I am hopeful I will be able to capture some of that energy in my piece.
