To create something similar you will need:
deColourant and/or deColourant Plus
(I used Natural Mustard Yellow and deColourant Creme)
Brushes or sponges for application
Stencils, stamps or printing blocks
Hair dryer or heat gun
A steam iron
A natural fiber garment (mine was 100% cotton)
and of course paper towels for drying stencils and brushes during use.
I also had an insert (foam core or cardboard) to keep the fabric taunt while working with the stencils. This helps to stablize the fabric, protect the off side of your garment and keep folds out of your work.

I let my piece dry between some of the heavier applications to keep from smearing any previous work. As it is over 100 degrees right now, that equates to 10 minutes outside. Some of the areas were small enough to use the hair dryer on to stablize the color.
I applied some of the deColourant as a one color stencil application. Others were blended as they were applied. I laid in color blocks of each color and then worked the edges of both to create the transistion blend.
As I worked through the steps I would steam iron to see how the design was working. This helped in picking out areas that needed more work or more color. I repeated the stencil, dry, iron steps about 5 times per sides. Working this way allowed me to really see the design as I worked. The colors only pop after the steam and heat is applied. Prior to ironing, it is hard to judge the amount of depth in the color application. Working in steps makes it easier to balance both color and design.
Can't wait to do another one. I may even "enhance" one of my blouses that was stained by an attack of a killer tomato! I would suggest allowing about 4-5 hours for a project like this. The actual color application goes fairly quickly but the drying and ironing takes time. The steam is what starts the color reaction. The more steam that is applied, the more color depth. You can control the colors by a thicker or thinner application of deColourant or by mixing and blending of colors. I have the 2.5 oz bottles and used about half of the Creme but only about 1/8 of the Mustard Yellow.
I hope you try these products out. I had a great time and will head to the store to purchase more colors.
